Returning to Switzerland

Each year, about 25,000 Swiss nationals return to live in Switzerland. In principle, they have to complete the same administrative formalities as when they left the country, only vice-versa: Notification of departure from the host country, customs formalities, searching for accommodation, registering with the residents’ registration office of the commune of domicile, searching for employment, registering with pension and compensation funds, etc.

The Federal Constitution guarantees all Swiss nationals living abroad the right to settle in any part of Switzerland upon their return. Non-Swiss family members and foreign unmarried partners, depending on their nationality, may require a visa to enter Switzerland. When the family knows where it will be residing in Switzerland, the foreign spouse or partner must apply to a Swiss embassy or consulate for a residence permit before entering the country.

Swiss nationals returning to Switzerland must register with the residents’ registration office of the commune in which they will be residing within 7 to 14 days of their arrival.

Finding work

If you are abroad and are looking for work in Switzerland, we may be able to help you. By registering, your curriculum vitae will be forwarded to the cantonal employment office, which will send your dossier to the regional employment office (RAV office) in the region of your choice. The RAV office will make your dossier available to any employers who may be interested.
