The former Federal Office for Migration FOM has become the State Secretariat for Migration SEM on January 1st 2015. This alteration is a response to the rising importance and the wide-ranging responsibilities. The organization and structure of the former office remain unchanged.

The State Secretariat regulates the conditions under which people can enter Switzerland in order to live and work here. It also decides who will receive protection from persecution. Moreover, the State Secretariat co-ordinates Federal government, cantonal and communal efforts in behalf of integration and is the organ responsible for naturalization matters.
